Travel Arrangements

Departure dates

For commencement of studies in semester 1 (in January) awardees are expected to depart for Australia between late December of previous year and January. For semester 2 (in June/July) awardees are expected to depart for Australia between late April and May. Aus4Skills will contact Institution/University and Vietnam Airlines to arrange the travel for awardees.

The specific departure date will be timed to coincide with the start of your university’s orientation and Introductory Academic Program (IAP). The actual start date for this program varies from university to university. Normally, you are expected to be ready for departure two weeks prior to the start dates which are stipulated in your offer. However, we will not be able to confirm your departure dates until your visa is granted.

You will receive the e-ticket via email from Vietnam Airlines and will be notified of changes in travel arrangements if any.

Flights are currently provided by Vietnam Airlines. All international flights depart from the Tan Son Nhat Airport, Ho Chi Minh City and arrive in either Melbourne or Sydney. Connecting flights to your final destination are provided by Qantas or Virgin Blue Airlines.

You could depart from one of the 10 major airports including Hanoi, Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, Vinh, Hue, Da Nang, Buon Me Thuot, Pleiku, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang. You will be travelling from one of these points to Tan Son Nhat Airport, Ho Chi Minh City and then take the next flights to Australia’s destinations.

You must travel on the date and time allocated by Aus4Skills. If the proposed travel arrangements are inconvenient for any reason, you may request a change. All requests must be made in writing to our office and it is our Program Director who approves such changes. You may only request one change and must travel on the allocated flight. Unless there are extenuating circumstances beyond your own control, there are personal financial consequences for candidates who vary their travel arrangements without prior authorisation.

Baggage allowance

It is your responsibility to make your own arrangements to reach the registered departure airport (one of 11 above airports) to board your allocated flight. Please ensure that you should allow plenty of time for check-in and other necessary related procedures. Please note that most Australia Awards Scholarship awardees who will arrive in Melbourne or Sydney have a maximum baggage allowance of 40kg. For flights to other destinations in Australia, the maximum baggage allowance is 30 kg. You will be responsible for paying any additional costs associated with excess baggage.

If you need assistance while transiting through the airports in Ho Chi Minh City, Melbourne or Sydney, please advise Aus4Skills in advance and we will request support from the Airlines. In all cases, please make your way directly to the connecting flight and do not leave the airport between flights.

On arrival

You could be greeted at your destination in Australia by the representatives of your university. The cost for providing this service is covered by DFAT. In addition, you could request your university to book initial accommodation in advance on your behalf. You will have to cover this cost by your own establishment allowance. Arrangements for the airport greeting service and initial accommodation are made via Aus4Skills prior to your departure. However, if you have registered these services but do not use them, the charge of the unused service will be passed on to you by your new university.

It is very important that the initial accommodation and airport registration is completed and submitted to Aus4Skills when required. If we do not receive your response by the mentioned deadline, it will be assumed that you require both airport pick-up service and initial accommodation.
